Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does a commissioning engineer actually do?

A commissioning engineer takes a newly installed heating, cooling or ventilation system from a static state and brings it into full working order. That means setting the system to work, measuring air and water flow rates, balancing the system so that each part of it delivers the intended performance, and recording the results against the original design. The work is carried out after installation but before handover, and provides the evidence that a system does what it was designed to do.

  • What is the difference between commissioning, verification and validation?

Commissioning is carried out on a new installation to bring it into working order and prove it meets the design. Verification is undertaken on an existing system to establish its current performance and compare it against the original design criteria. Validation is the term generally used for specialist environments such as operating theatres, isolation rooms and laboratories, where systems must be proven against defined standards on a recurring basis. We provide all three.

  • Why does a system need commissioning if it has been installed correctly?

Installation and performance are not the same thing. A correctly installed system will still deliver too much air or water to some parts of a building and too little to others until it is balanced, because flow naturally follows the path of least resistance. Commissioning identifies and corrects those imbalances, so that every terminal, room and circuit receives what the design intended. It also demonstrates compliance, as commissioning is a requirement of the Building Regulations for most fixed building services.

  • What happens if a system fails to meet its design performance?

We report exactly what we have measured and, wherever possible, identify the cause - an undersized fan or pump, a blocked or leaking duct, a valve set incorrectly, or a design assumption that does not hold on site. Where the shortfall can be resolved by adjustment we will do so and re-test. Where it requires remedial work by the installing contractor, we record the position clearly so that responsibility is evident and the system can be re-tested once corrected.

  • Do you carry out testing on existing systems, or only new installations?

Both. Alongside commissioning of new installations, we regularly test and verify existing systems to establish current performance, support a change of use, investigate comfort or air quality complaints, or meet recurring compliance obligations such as annual healthcare ventilation verification. Following testing we provide a report detailing our findings and comparing measured results against the design criteria and any client-specified targets.
